When do the last trains leave Yokohama?
The kitchen at a Minato Mirai izakaya closes at 22:00. Not because the chef wants to go home, but because the last train from Sakuragichō leaves at 0:07. Miss it and you are stranded until 5:00.
Yokohama’s rail network shuts down in a tight half-hour cluster. No line runs all night.
JR East (Keihin-Tōhoku, Negishi, Tōkaidō lines): final departures from Yokohama’s main terminals fall between 0:00 and 0:25. The Tōkaidō Line’s last up-train toward Tokyo slips out just after midnight.
Yokohama Municipal Subway (Blue Line, Green Line): last trains run 0:10 to 0:30, varying by stop and direction. The Green Line, serving the western wards, finishes earlier than the Blue Line.
Minatomirai Line (linked to the Tōkyū Tōyoko Line): last departures from Motomachi-Chūkagai and Yokohama stops sit around 0:10 to 0:20. Trains bound for Shibuya stop earlier than those terminating at Yokohama.
If you are boarding from a smaller stop, Kamiōoka on the Green Line or a local JR halt, add five to ten minutes to those times. Last trains from terminus platforms are not the same as last trains from your platform.
What to do if you miss the last Yokohama train
The network closes for maintenance. First trains resume around 5:00.
Three choices.
-
A taxi. The late-night surcharge applies from 22:00, adding 20% to the meter. A ride from Minato Mirai to Tsurumi Ward runs ¥3,000 to ¥4,000. To Shin-Yokohama, ¥4,000 to ¥5,000. To central Tokyo, ¥10,000 or more.
-
Wait it out. Some convenience stores (Seven-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson) stay open 24 hours. So does Don Quijote. Sit, drink coffee, wait for the 5:00 first train. Common among younger crowds and budget travellers.
-
Walk. Parts of Yokohama connect on foot. Kannai to Sakuragichō takes 15 minutes. Minato Mirai to Yokohama hub is 20 minutes. Motomachi to anywhere west of the rail corridor: an hour or more.
How last departure times shape Yokohama nightlife
Restaurants in Minato Mirai take last orders around 21:00 to 22:00. Not because the kitchen closes, but because owners know the train schedule. If you cannot get home, you will not come back.
Izakaya in Noge and Kannai stay open later, some until 2:00 or 3:00, but they serve a local crowd who can walk or take a short taxi ride. Tourist-heavy areas align their closing times with the final departures. Chinatown takes last orders around 21:30 to 22:00. Red Brick Warehouse shops close at 20:00, restaurants at 22:00 to 23:00.
Concerts at Yokohama Arena and Nissan Stadium schedule end times for 21:00 to 21:30. The stadium website explicitly advises checking last train times before buying tickets. A show ending at 22:00 leaves 30 to 60 minutes to reach a platform and catch the final departure. If the encore runs long, you are walking or hailing a taxi.
Does Yokohama run later trains on New Year’s Eve?
One exception. On New Year’s Eve, some lines operate limited all-night or extended service. JR East typically runs extra trains until 1:30 to 2:00 on the Keihin-Tōhoku and Negishi lines. The Minatomirai Line sometimes runs through the night. This is the only night of the year the schedule changes.
Public holidays do not get extended service. Some lines run a Saturday or holiday timetable, which can mean earlier last departures. Check the specific operator’s website for the day you are travelling.
Who needs to watch the last Yokohama train most?
If you live within walking distance of a Blue Line or JR East stop, the last train is a minor constraint. You can stay out until 0:15 and still get home.
If you live in the western wards (Aoba, Midori, Totsuka) or in areas served only by bus, the last train is a hard deadline. Buses stop earlier than trains, typically by 22:00. Missing the last bus means a taxi from the nearest rail stop, which adds time and cost.
If you are visiting from overseas and staying near Tokyo hub or Shinagawa, watch the Minatomirai Line’s connection to the Tōkyū Tōyoko Line. The last through-train to Shibuya leaves Yokohama around 23:30. After that, you must change at Yokohama to JR East, which has its own last train schedule. A 20-minute delay at dinner turns into a ¥10,000 taxi to Tokyo.
What time should you really leave for the last Yokohama train?
Assume the last departure is 0:00 from your stop. Plan to be on the platform by 23:45. If you are at a restaurant or bar, order your last drink by 22:30. That gives you time to pay, walk to the platform, and stand there before the final departure.
Do not assume you can make a last train leaving at 0:07 if you are still at a table at 23:30. The walk from a Minato Mirai restaurant to Sakuragichō is 10 to 15 minutes. Add queue time for the ticket gate. Add the chance the train is already at the platform and the doors close early.
