Standard hours for all 18 wards
Yokohama’s 18 ward offices (区役所, kuyakusho) share one schedule:
Monday to Friday: 8:45-17:15
Saturday, Sunday, national holidays: closed
That 8:45 start is not a typo. It is 15 minutes before the typical Japanese office start of 9:00. If you arrive at 9:00 you are already 15 minutes into the queue. Aim for 8:30 to be near the front.
Which evening can I visit the ward office after work?
One evening per week most wards stay open later. The standard late night is Wednesday until 19:00.
This is useful for people who cannot get time off during standard working hours. You can file a resident registration update, apply for a My Number card, or pay taxes after 17:15. But the window is narrow: you get from 17:15 to 19:00, not a full extra day.
Some wards use Tuesday or Thursday instead of Wednesday. The city sets the policy, but individual wards can shift the late night to suit local demand. Always check the specific ward’s website before going.
What you can do during those hours
The services available during regular and late hours include:
- Resident registration (address changes, moving in or out of the ward)
- My Number card applications and reissuance
- Family registry (koseki) requests
- Tax payments (municipal, property)
- National health insurance enrolment
- Pension paperwork
- Childcare and school-related registration
Not every desk stays open until 19:00 on Wednesday. Some specialised sections, like the tax consultation desk or the pension advice desk, may close at 17:00 even on late nights. If your business is specialised, call ahead.
Are any ward offices open on Saturday?
Two wards have offered Saturday morning service in the past: Naka Ward and Kohoku Ward.
This is not a guarantee. The availability changes year to year, and some services are excluded. Typically Saturday desks open 8:45-12:00 or 8:45-13:00, but only for resident registration and My Number card pickup. Tax payments and family registry requests are usually not available on Saturday.
Verify with your specific ward office before going on a Saturday. The city’s official ward office directory is the only reliable source. Do not rely on third‑party blogs or forum posts from 2023.
Do ward offices close on national holidays?
Japan has 16 national holidays in 2026 and 16 in 2027. On every one of them the ward office is closed.
Key 2026 closures to mark on your calendar:
- New Year’s Day: 1 January
- Coming of Age Day: 12 January
- Foundation Day: 11 February
- Emperor’s Birthday: 23 February
- Vernal Equinox Day: 20 March
- Showa Day: 29 April
- Constitution Day: 3 May
- Greenery Day: 4 May
- Children’s Day: 5 May
- Substitute Holiday: 6 May (Golden Week block)
- Marine Day: 20 July
- Mountain Day: 11 August
- Respect for the Aged Day: 21 September
- National Holiday: 22 September
- Autumnal Equinox Day: 23 September
- Sports Day: 12 October
- Culture Day: 3 November
- Labor Thanksgiving Day: 23 November
If your only free day is a Saturday that happens to fall on a holiday weekend, you will need to wait until Monday. There are no emergency desks for holidays.
Can I still get things done if I arrive after 17:15?
If you show up at 17:20 on a Tuesday, the main desk is closed. Do not assume you can slip in. The doors lock or the security guard turns people away.
Your options:
- Return Wednesday evening if your ward has the late night that week.
- Use a convenience store for tax payments. Most 7‑Eleven, FamilyMart and Lawson stores accept municipal tax payments at the desk until 23:00. You need the barcoded payment slip from the ward office.
- Use the online My Number card application portal. You do not need to visit the ward office at all for a new card. The card is mailed to your home.
- Go to the city hall (Yokohama City Hall in Naka Ward) for some services that cover multiple wards, but city hall follows the same hours: 8:45-17:15, late Wednesday until 19:00.
Can I use a different ward office instead of my own?
If you need a family registry copy or a resident certificate, you can get it from any ward office in Yokohama, not just your own. This is true for most basic certificates. You do not have to travel to your assigned ward. If your ward is crowded or has a long queue, walk to a quieter ward.
The only catch: if you need a consultation (pension, tax advice, childcare subsidy), you must go to your home ward. Certificates only.
Who needs to plan around these hours the most
New residents moving to Yokohama from overseas. You are used to government offices that stay open until 19:00 weeknights and 17:00 on Saturday. Yokohama does not work like that. Plan your move‑in date so you land before Wednesday afternoon, or you will wait a full week.
Shift workers and hospitality staff. If you work evenings and weekends, the Wednesday late night is your only option. Use it. Do not try to pop in on a Saturday morning unless you have confirmed the Saturday desk exists and handles your specific task.
Parents with young children. Some ward offices have a small play area or a nursing room, but they close at 17:00. If you arrive at 16:45 with a toddler, you will not finish in time. Go on Wednesday evening when the play area is still open until 18:30, or bring a second adult to wait outside.
